Ordered for takeout- quoted 15-20 minutes, more like 30-40 Once I got there it seemed like the phone rang off the hook nonstop. I waited about 10-15 minutes. So much foot traffic coming in and ordering as well. *not a place you really sit an eat in I took the nonstop as a good sign that this place is going to be good. It wasn't bad. Wonton soup- Good wontons, cooked through, some flavor, broth wasn't bad. The best? No, but good for Ann Arbor Mapo Tofu with pork added (requested pork)- Delicious! Very few places make mapo tofu correctly and I'm happy to report that this place is one of them. Come and get it! Pepper steak- something left to be desired. Hubby said he's had better. Overall feeling: Maybe it was what we ordered but on par with the rest of the Ameri-Chinese food here. Wish they delivered to my house which is why a star was knocked off. Would I make the trek again? I'd give it a go one more time and ordered something else but I'm leaving soon so that's not happening. Try it, maybe it varies by dish. Prices are decent for the amount you get.

If I could give them 40 stars I would!!!! Hands down best Chinese food in a 30 mile radius. (We've tried a lot). Food is delicious. Service is spot on.!they accidentally overcharged us, we didn't notice. They called us after we had left and apologized... Then credited back our CC. Integrity.

Best chinese takeout for the money. Fast delivery, too. We have ordered from them many times and never had a problem, never had an order screwed up. Always gets the order correct and is delivered hot and delicious.

  • Chainda M.

My coworkers order in often. This was the first time I ordered from them. They delivered fairly fast and inexpensive. I ordered the beef and broccoli the veggies were fresh and the beef was tender, the sauce was seasoned perfectly the way I like.

For take out Chinese food, King Shing is pretty good! They always get my order right and delivery is pretty quick! Never a disappointment when craving Chinese food. Despite the current construction on Carpenter Rd, delivery is still pretty quick!

Looks can be deceiving but this place serves phenomenal food. We have dined at Chinese joints across the Nation and this one seems to get it right. King Shing is my favorite take out place. We recommend the Kung Pao Chicken and Tofu, Orange Chicken, and Homestyle Tofu. Great portions and great taste!

Really good steamed dumplings and beef lo mien. And the pork egg rolls were awesome too.

Good food for a great price. We enjoyed our meal of boneless spare ribs general tso's deluxe rice and chicken and broccoli. The New York wings looked really funny so we chucked them. Overall we were pleased.

I am giving KS a three star rating for the quantity and price. I should probably only give it a two star based on the delivery and business practices of the establishment. I agree most of the food is pretty good and comes in large quantities. Unfortunately, if you order delivery, you may wait a lot longer than they will tell you. For example, for the third time in the last couple months, I've waited more than an hour for a delivery that was promised in 40 minutes. Today it was 80 minutes, double the estimate. This is a consistent problem I and others in my office have noticed. Further, when the food arrives and it's not even warm, the taste suffers. So I just had an unsatisfying meal that took so long to arrive, I'm late for a meeting. Not a happy ending.

My Chinese takeout of choice in AA! I've been to this place a couple of times, and it's always hit the spot. The food is tasty -- and maybe it's just me, but I think their food is a bit less greasy than the average Chinese takeout? I especially notice this with the fried rice, which never seems oily and is generously flecked with meat, bean sprouts, onions, etc. For a "side", the fried rice feels very substantial and has a great texture (I love a little bit of crunchy veg in mine, personally). The steamed dumplings (while probably not particularly healthy) are another particular favorite. Also try their crunchy, golden almond cookies, which are I think five for $1. Can't beat that! The portion sizes here work well for me. The main dishes aren't overwhelmingly large, which is good -- we inevitably want to order more than one entree to share, and at some restaurants this can result in a laughable (and wasteful) amount of food. The serving sizes here are reasonable, but definitely generous enough that you'll have lunch leftovers for the next day. The thing that really clinches it for me are the lunch specials, which are an awesome value, especially for AA. Pork fried rice, an egg roll, and General Tso's chicken for $4.50. If you pay in cash, you get a free soup (if you remember to ask). If I want an affordable, fast lunch, I WAY prefer this place to hitting a drive-thru. You keep doin' you, King Shing.

I'm glad we found this place, and that is thanks to Yelp. King Shing has good food for a good price. It's not a nice sit-down restaurant, but for informal dining (and delivery/take-out), it's great. The food is hot and good. I got egg drop soup--a giant portion, a delicious soup. The vegetable egg roll was just okay. The orange chicken was GREAT. More garlicky than I'm used to, but I liked that. And the meat was GOOD quality. Each time I ate a piece of chicken I noted what good chicken it was. Also a big portion. All of this for an appealing price. All the regulars are also here--duck sauce, spicy mustard, tea, fortune cookies, etc. Seems like a reliable place to get good, fast Chinese food. Why not 5 stars? It didn't blow me away. It was good, we'll definitely go back, but I don't drool thinking about it the way I do some other restaurants.

Love the food here... hard to find a place like this that is affordable and done right

  • Kelly J.

My new go-to place for carry-out Chinese. I thought 4.25 was expensive for crab rangoon, until I realized that it comes with 8 huge wontons! And the 4.25 almond chicken lunch? Fantastic! Nothing special, just solid, good chicken with crispy breading and a decent gravy. The pork fried rice it came with, though, was excellent! It's full of onion, bean sprouts, and pork, and it isn't just white rice soaked in soy sauce. It was really nice. I will definitely be ordering again. Good, cheap chinese food, and it was done very quickly!

Easily the best Chinese food place in the Ann Arbor Ypsilanti area. Always gotta get my fix here. I drive 15 mins just to get me some. And drive 15 mins back. Should tell you how good it is.

I'm a picky (read: unadventurous) eater in any cuisine, but really love a few American-Chinese dishes. King Shing has done all of them well so far. Somehow, their takeout seems to stay hot longer than usual Chinese and the ingredients taste fresh. Prices are fantastic for the quality. Portions are huge. I would not bring a date to dine in, but it totally sells movie night. Favorites: - Egg rolls (eat immediately, balanced and delicious) - Pork fried rice (light, egg, great flavor, respectable pork) - Fried dumplings (big, good dipping sauce) - Teriyaki chicken (slightly better than usual meat-on-a-stick) - General Tso's chicken (quality chicken, good breading and sauce)

Worlds worst chinese food. My hot and spicy scallops were 75% celery and onions/10% other random veg/ and 15% scallops and water chestnuts. The scallops were cut the same size as the water chestnuts, I imagine to make it look like there were more scallops. The whole thing was in a soupy greasy sauce with little red flecks (peppers) in it. I tried to pick out some scallops and random vegetables, but gave up and fed the dish to my Hefty garbage bag. My dog got none of this-I love him too much. Yeah, the prices are good, but this food is just awful. I went to bed hungry.

  • Patrick T.

Really like this place. It's cheap and tasty food. Sure, it's oily and unhealthy, but it's so delicious, and the portion sizes are enormous. An entree/combo is definitely enough for two meals. Haven't had a bad meal eating in or taking out. The pork fried rice that comes with the combos is outstanding. The lunch combos are ridiculously cheap.

This is such an awesome place. The other night I ordered delivery...two dishes, two sides for $20! I have gotten a lot of Chinese take-out in my life and it usually always adds up to over $35! The food is delicious...the crab rangoons are to die for. Love the lo-mein and the sesame chicken too. Will be going back a lot!

Finally! I have found decent Chinese food in Michigan! Better than decent - really good! Hurray! Let us take to the streets with dancing and general merriment! Seriously, I'm very excited to have stumbled upon this little hole in the wall. Very. Why? Because I'm from New York and, let me tell you, no place does Chinese food like New York. Probably not even China. I doubt anything I have ever eaten is authentic but kind of like Chicago vs. NY in pizza, you come to love the stuff you grow up on and that becomes the standard. And for me, the standard is Nassau and Kings County Chinese food served in a teeny space with some little tables that never have people eating there except maybe someone who works in the kitchen. Since moving to Michigan I have not found a single place that has Chinese that tastes anything like what I'm used to. All of that changed yesterday. While out running some errands with N we were getting a little hungry. Since we didn't have K with us it meant we could eat Chinese (he won't eat anything from the Asian continent other than Indian and Pakistani cuisine). We finished up at Arborland and checked Yelp for local Asian fare and this place was the top choice based on ratings and proximity. We headed over and were happy to see so many people awaiting their takeout orders. I was thrilled to see a Chinese take out place looking EXACTLY like the ones I grew up on and that dotted my old neighborhood in Brooklyn. Same gray counter top, same backlit pictures above the counter, same slightly pissed off woman taking the order. We decided to go big or go home and ordered quite a bit to take home. It will probably be the next few meals and snacks. The soup was fantastic although I'm still not sure why I get nervous about whatever is in a wonton. It's served piping hot and it's a perfect amount and great ratio of broth to wonton. The white rice is perfectly cooked and sticky and has a clean, untainted flavor - they must be careful here not to mix utensils. We got egg rolls and it was, by far, the best I've had in Michigan. N, my exchange student, loved her Shrimp Roll. The pork fried rice was perfect with a good amount of pork that was perfectly cooked. We got sweet and sour chicken and while the chicken was breaded and fried it wasn't overdone and greasy but instead nicely crisped but still tender and chickeny on the inside. The sauce is amazing and would be great on any type of meat or even just plain rice. We ordered the curry beef and, praise buddha, it wasn't just beef with sauce with too much curry powder mixed in. It was actual, tasty, curry beef! And not nearly as spicy as I was worried about (N doesn't like too much kick). This is officially the spot I'll go for Chinese from now on on those rare occasions when I get to eat Chinese (like when Kris heads to Atlantic City in a few weeks). I have a feeling my four will become five once I try the General Tso's which, in my book, is the true test of any Chinese place. This is on the other side of town for me but I will never get the local stuff again! Thank you, King Shing!

FOUND MY NEW FAVORITE CHINESE TAKE OUT IN ANN ARBOR! This place gives you HUGGEE portion for cheap. Reminds me of food you get in chinatown. That's a def. plus. Quick service. I would say for the price and quality - better than TK WU and China Gate hands down. Love their wide noodle beef stir fry and general tso's chicken :)

  • Ben H.

Would have loved to try their delivery, but living at Stadium and Packard we are apparently too far to be out of their delivery zone. Best delivery in Ann Arbor?? We are like 2 minutes from them. WTF?

Best takeout in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area! King Shing chefs are real experts in Chinese food prep, cooking technique, and sauces. I agree with the other comments regarding NY Style, which is a good thing. However, they have stepped up on NY in terms of quality with large white meat chicken in their General chicken, nice meaty ribs, and frying technique on point (food is cooked, but not fried dry like most of the other local takeouts). Here is a list of things that are excellent and you will enjoy: Spare Ribs Fried wonton Wonton Soup Wonton Egg Drop Soup General Tsos Chicken There are many other things that you will enjoy, but these will make a good start for anybody that wants to try some of their best! KIng Shing is very affordable with serving sizes for at least two. I look forward to this place weekly!!!

Having spent quite a bit of time living in China, I can say that this is definitely not the most authentic chinese food in the area. That being said, if you're looking for great Americanized chinese food (think general Tso's chicken and the like), this is hands down the place to go. Lunch specials (11-3) are less than $5, and are enough for at least 1.5 meals. I go here at least once a week and have never been dissatisfied with the food or the service. 5/5 would recommend

Picking a rating for King Shing is tough... I think it is indeed a great value (especially some of the $4-5 lunch combos) and among the better Chinese (American-style, of course) places in the area. Unfortunately, I'm not really enamored with any of them. Pros: - Cheap food - Good portions and flavors - Some fresh veggies surprised me (e.g., zucchini) - Chicken was fresh and tender - Fluffy egg foo young - Fair protein to vegetable ratio - Interesting fried rice (saffron color, but very light flavor) Cons: - Cheap food - Some kind of meat in the vegetarian egg roll? - Some canned veggies (e.g., mushrooms?) - Steak was burnt, making it tough and dry - Wonton soup had an odd flavor (thrown out!) - Bottom egg foo young soaked in oil - Crab Rangoon should be renamed Cream Cheese Rangoon - Ridiculous upcharge for fried rice (~$3 over white rice per pint) - Poor quality almond and fortune cookies - Service was not helpful or friendly (please hang up your cell before waiting on me) - Dingy dining room (but whose eating in, anyway?) - Interesting/entertaining health dept. reviews (see online) If I was in the mood for a quick Chinese carryout, I'd come back for one of the combos - so it's better than one star. Despite the positives, I experienced too many negatives that I just haven't at the other local 3-star places... thus a solid 2+ for the value.

Wow just ordered from here. Ordered General chicken. Sauce wasn't even sweet. Fried rice was swimming in oil. Egg Role was good though. Also noticed a charge on my receipt for "paying over the phone". What the heck is that? First time for that. Then I read a review from someone about health department inspection. So I looked it up. Wow, doesn't sound sanitary. Food stored above required temp. Ok last time I'll order here.

We chose this restaurant based on 4 out of 5 stars, and expected much better. If you like average priced entree's and good portion sizes, but don't care about flavor, then this is your place. If you expect quality food with taste, I would encourage you to search elsewhere. Pros: we picked up (take out), food was ready upon arrival food is reasonably priced portion sizes are great Cons: absolutely bland gen tso's chicken, hot and sour soup was "okay" and honestly I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars, online menu stated they served eggplant, but when I called, the lady told me eggplant has never been on their menu, string beans (green beans) tasted like they had been boiled, and then soaked briefly in soy sauce (no flavor what so ever). Conclusion: great for college students who need meals during those late night study sessions. Horrible for anyone who wants good food.

very good Chinese food. portions are large and tasty. doesn't have that MSG taste that makes everything taste the same in other Chinese restaurants. place is clean, tables not sticky. owner is personable. solid choice on this side of town..

King Shing is consistently the best Ann Arbor Chinese carry out/delivery restaurant I've found. I've tried many but King Shing consistently tastes the best and is very reasonably priced. I usually order home style bean curd, vegetable egg rolls and vegetable egg foo young, all of which are good. Sometimes I also get the sesame tofu, which is also good. According to the reviews, others have run into some customer service problems, but the staff here have never been anything but courteous to me. Also, delivery is usually pretty quick. If you're looking for quick Chinese food in Ann Arbor, you'd be hard pressed to find better than King Shing.

Great, cheap, fast Chinese food, period. You get what you pay for, but its really good. Been eating here for about 3 years and almost always love it.

  • Sean G.

The absolute best value for Chinese food in the area. The food is decent, service is quick. Lunch combos can be ordered every day of the week including the weekends. $4.50 for most of them that includes soup, eggroll and good sized entree. How do they do it? I'm not sure I wanna know, but the vegetables seem fresh and meat is decent. I love the Hunan Chicken ordered spicy. The only con is the limited seating. The atmosphere is straight forward, nothing high end. They seem to do an amazing carryout business. They also have good dinner combo prices and options though the lunch deal is by far the best for what you get. For these prices and quality, I hope it's the volume that is keeping them going!

Love the food, and the value. The employees are always nice, especially to my toddler. I would recommend this place to everyone. Especially the szechwan beef, moo go gai pan, and the sweet and sour chicken.

Love this place, I come here every month as a treat for my self. Always consistent, great service, and the General Tao's is amazing at this place. I've been to so many places and its perfect here nice hot and spicy flavorful and robust in taste. Love it. They do need to work a little on fixing up the dining area but the food always outweighs that !

  • Jeffrey G.

Huge portions; low price on the lunch specials. Usually pretty fast delivery for lunch, too. Whether dine in or take out, it's always hot & fresh. Hot & sour soup has a fair amount of veggies and tofu, unlike some Chinese places that barely give you thin, watery spiced soup. Pork fried rice with lunch combos is pretty good. Con: the General Tso's chicken comes with two (2) pieces of broccoli. But it has a decent spice and stays hot.

Let's face it. Life under the bubble in A2 seems teeming with corner Mom and Pop ethnic restaurants; King Shing is no exception. While they do deliver, I prefer pick up, though at times Carpenter can be a tad bit traffic clogged. During these times, I jug handle on the back residential streets to get where I need to be, rather than wait and wait and wait for a break on Carpenter. That said, let's talk about the niche market food. King Shing, for my gustatory palate, offers only one item that stands out: Mongolian Chicken. Savory crunchy onions swim in a rich soy based sauce that offers a hint of smokiness and huge chunks of shredded dark meat perfectly cooked. The owner confided it me that the addition of a pinch of sugar at the end og wok time seals the deal. Did I mention that the size of the large order can easily feed three? Others enjoy the Mapo Tofu (again, a huge quart of tofu resting in a succulent sauce), though for my taste, I prefer the tofu to be fried rather than steamed. I have tried the Orange Chicken (bready and plain) and the General Tso's Chicken (bready and plain) and keep returning to the only thing on the menu for me: Mongolian Chicken. The soups (egg drop and hot/sour) hit the spot on a cold day, too! Like other Mom and Pop ethnic restaurants in town, King Shing seem to excel in one or two items then slide into average-ness with everything else. Oh yes, I have ordered delivery and the Mongolian Chicken appeared before I had a chance to find my wallet, which has been lightened significantly during the last months. On the Mongolian Chicken alone, I offer it four stars.

Greasy Chinese for CHEAP. Love their lunch specials. I wish I had the chance to eat here more often, but it's a way's away.

Good, cheap food. Helpful and friendly enough. I wouldn't eat at one of the four tables, but take it home once a week. Steamed veggies and shrimp with sauce on the side. Good and not terrible for you.Egg rolls are ok. Crab Rangoon - meh. This place is what it is-don't expect some gastronomic epiphany and you'll be fine.

  • Mr. Critic X.

Horrible, used to be a regular....but I found long piece of hair wrapped around a piece of chicken once. I gave it a break for a couple months, and then that is when it happened again...this time in my wonton. I can't deal anymore and they lost me as a customer. The owner lady was awesome when she was there, and then she was replaced by some new older lady the last couple months who has the worst manners and service I have ever seen in a human being. Hope they get rid of her and turn it around before it becomes another shut down chinese joint due to health code violations.

Incredibly rude staff. I have been a weekly customer for their cheap chinese for years. After today's experience I will NEVER return. From the moment I placed my order via phone to the time I picked it up, there was nothing but rudeness. She was even rude to another customer in front of me. At that point I felt compelled to say something about it, stating that she is acting a bit rude and short with her customers. I said, "don't you care about your customers? I come every single week." She said, "no, not you! You go! You never come back. You not welcome." I along with everyone sitting in the small creepy space were floored by her comments. Don't worry.....I won't be back. And I'll be sure to tell others to do the same.

  • Brian W.

Typical average chinese food, with horrible customer service, got there at 332 and waited two minutes while she took phone order, and then said i was past 330 lunch special...I like good food, but I also enjoy good friendly customer service. it's one thing when the food is special, but this food is a dime a dozen in the area. CUSTOMER LOST

Love the food here. I am by no means a health freak but I do love their special diet menu chicken and vegetables. The two of us get one of the meals which include heaping portion of steamed chicken with a wide variety of vegetables, DELICIOUS slightly spicy garlic sauce and white rice. We usually get an extra medium size white rice and an extra sauce. It is around $11. It is hearty and totally fills us up. The wonton soup is very fresh and my fiancé loves the crab rangoon. As far as service goes, they have always been nice to us. Whether it was dine-in, take-out or delivery we have always been treated with respect. The lady has even been so nice as to teach me how to reheat the garlic sauce and told me what they use to thicken it so I could do it at home.

BEST GENERALS CHICKEN/ORANGE CHICKEN I'VE EVER HAD. I hate to admit this, but I once had completely given up on Generals chicken due to the un-invited surprises that I would get for the "chicken" in the Generals chicken. You all know what I'm talking about, you may better know it as mystery meat (cue the dark and creepy music). The one dish that I felt I never would get sick of, and would always come back to, let me down so bad, that I literally quit eating it because the quality of the chicken, despite where I went, was so grotesque. I once pondered, I love Buffalo Wild Wings' Asian Zing wings so much, why don't I just order fried rice and an egg roll and call it good? Well, I never tried that, because my wallet wouldn't be too happy with me; so I continued my abstinence from Generals chicken. Until one fateful and glorious day I chose to throw a Hail Mary, and go check out this place I've only driven by, called King Shing, and try their Generals chicken; one of the best culinary decisions I've ever made. THEIR CHICKEN FOR GENERALS CHICKEN IS ALL WHITE MEAT! This is the dish I had been longing for for so long. No more mystery meat (yippee!) This is by far the closest I will ever get to my fantasy of eating Asian Zing BDubs wings with fried rice, and I don't feel like I'm making that much of a compromise. If you, like me, had once given up your love of Generals chicken due to the fact that you just couldn't handle putting another piece of that deep fried mystery meat in your mouth, then rejoice, because your love has now been renewed, compliments of King Shing.

Best chinese food in town in my opinion, I had a bad encounter with some foul chinese food about 5 years ago, and I refused to get it again, that changed when I discovered the kung pao tofu dish here, AMAZING!!!

    Kung Pao Tofu!

  • Mei O.

I'm going to pretty much echo the majority of the reviews, but here it goes: Sweet jeebus are the prices low. I got a large hot & sour soup for less than $4. Their large kung pao chicken was around $8. And the portion sizes were nothing to sneeze at, I am going to get 3 meals out of my order. The food itself? Not too bad. It's not exactly authentic, but it has all the familiar flavors of Chinese food adapted for the American palate. I would definitely say it's a step up from Panda Express though, and a little less greasy than other similarly styled places. They have a quick turnaround, which is great if you're hungry and low on patience. I walked in, ordered, and was out the door again with my food within 15 minutes. Awesome! I wouldn't recommend eating at the restaurant itself, while it does have the cozy mom and pop shop feel, the ambiance leaves much to be desired.

With the fantastic Great Lake Chinese restaurant located right across Carpenter Road, it's hard to see how King Shing stays in business. It may because they're relatively cheap and they do a brisk delivery business. I like the shrimp fried rice here particularly. The shrimp are plump and plentiful. They give you large portions for decent prices. Patrons definitely don't go there for the decor or the atmosphere, though. There are a few tables, so it's possible to dine in, but I wouldn't recommend it- it's like eating in your high school cafeteria. When I did dine in, they had a big cooler of tea that you could help yourself to. It's a nice value, though the fact that it dripped on the floor didn't do much for the lack of atmosphere.

  • Kk W.

Absolutely the best Chinese in town. My kids come in from Chicago and always request a trip as the food is so good. Very reasonable. Don't expect atmosphere. The front staff person who is most often there is very grumpy. But hey, take your food out or sit at the several small foods and enjoy Chinese cuisine better than any other in town. Warning: tables and chairs sticky, rest of restaurant not spic and span but I figure the woks are hot and I haven't gotten sick after many years of eating there. Sort of hate to make a rec as the place may get more crowded and raise its prices@@

I've been hunting for good Chinese food in my neck of the woods for a few years now. I avoided King Shing only because it was across from another Chinese restaurant that I'm not a fan of, so I very rarely even thought to come this way. Finally, after a co-worker's recommendation, I called King Shing for a take out order. I could not have been happier with the overall experience. Since then I've been here a few more times. and I can recommend King Shing on a number of levels. First of all, the timing here is right on. If they tell you it'll be 15 minutes, you can almost perfectly time it to be that time. The food here is very fresh, with ingredients that are not of the "mystery vegetable" variety that many other Chinese restaurants fall back on. The Sesame and General Tso chicken dishes are easy recommendations, as are the various lo meins and fried rices. The pork with mushrooms is quite tasty, and the hot and sour soup is a total winner. I'd never say it's the best Chinese food I've ever had, but King Shing is reliable, well-timed, and very tasty. An easy winner.

Um..yum! Ordered the general tso's extra spicy combo, the dragon and the phoenix, 2 eggrolls, one garlic string beans, and an side order of pork fried rice: all for less than $30 The fried rice was top notch! Super fresh and tasty. The food was ready for pick up within 15 minutes. Hugely large portions, but the food is a little bland and underspiced. Quick fix: Just dump some hot mustard on it and call it a day! Will be coming back here again!

How have I gone 10 years in AA and not known about King Shing?! I am one of those people who rarely eats Chinese food in Ann Arbor, much less the state of Michigan. I've been spoiled by the homemade Chinese food that I get from my boyfriend's mother when I visit them in California, and it's hard to eat sub-par Chinese food once you've had hers. I've eaten at Saigon Garden, Szechuan West, Great Lakes, Asian Legend, TK Wu, Dinersty, Middle Kingdom, Kai Garden, Lucky Kitchen, Chia Shiang, and China Gate. I'm pretty sure I'm missing a couple of delivery places. It's been years since I've ordered from any of them, and obviously, they weren't so memorable. BUT King Shing! King Shing is the Chinese restaurant in Ann Arbor that has eluded me all these years. It's probably eluded you, too. King Shing has HUGE portions of food made w/ very fresh (clearly not frozen or canned--with the exception of the baby corn and water chestnuts) vegetables/ingredients. I ordered a tofu dish when I went, but my friends ordered dishes containing chicken, beef, and shrimp, none of which were reminiscent of mystery meat. The shrimp was large, looked like it was not from a frozen bag, and was deveined which makes a big difference in my book. The chicken came in huge pieces of white meat, and the beef came in sizeable pieces that weren't all fat. I ordered the tofu pad thai and got enough for 3 meals out of it. I also ordered the hot & sour soup which was delicious! It was a great consistency and just the right spiciness where it wasn't overly spicy and had some nice sourness to it. You could easily add some pepper to get it to your preferred level of spiciness, but I think the soup was great as is. There was also no pork pieces in it, which I prefer because pork frequently freaks me out if it's not in bacon form. King Shing delivers, and whereas other restaurants will make you buy $15 to $20 worth of food to deliver, King Shing requires you to spend $8 only. The lunch combos are never more than $4.75 each, come with an eggroll and fried rice, and are large enough to have leftovers to eat dinner, too. If you want dessert, why not order 5 almond cookies (not homemade though) for $1. It's a steal! Had I known about King Shing prior to a couple of days ago, I would have eaten my fair share of it over the last several years. This is definitely the ONLY place in Ann Arbor that I would get Chinese food from.

This is the best "non-authentic Chinese" ("American-Chinese"?) I've had in the Ann Arbor area. Plus they are cheap and deliver so fast... love them. Not to mention you get huge portions.

I'm giving this place 5 stars. This is not eve or middle kingdom and does not pretend to be. In the context of Chinese takeout it is stellar. The complimentary pork fried rice with the lunch special was above average filled with onions and sprouts and green onion and such. My General Tso was all white meat with no grizzled mystery meat. General Tso can vary so much from place to place I find it a good gauge as to how much I will like the food. It comes with soup but no eggroll. Before 3:30pm I paid $4.51 out the door. Incredible value. This is my first time getting food from here and I have live here for decades. Had it not been for Abby C's review I would still be missing out. I giving this one extra star because it is a total yelp find.

King Shing is our go-to Chinese restaurant. Americanized Chinese varies considerably. Almost everything in Ann Arbor is terrible because it is greasy, flavorless, mono-textural, and uninspired. But King Shing hits all the factors for excellent Americanized Chinese: its fried rice (and all of its food) isn't too greasy and has a decent amount of veg, egg, and pork to make it interesting; the egg rolls are crispy, fresh, and stuffed with cabbage and no shrimp; the General Tso and other chicken dishes are made with white meat chunks of actual chicken, without bones, mystery nubbins, or gristle. The sauces for all the dishes actually taste great--like something other than "red sauce" and "brown sauce"--I consider this a hell of a bonus and more, really, than you should expect from takeout Chinese. The dishes that should have vegetables, do, and the veggies are always fresh. The prices are absurdly cheap. They'll make food extra spicy on request (recommended). The only weakness is the egg drop soup, which is uncharacteristically greasy and not as flavorful as I'd like. But I still order a large every time, so it must not be that bad. As for the recent reviews of rudeness--we've never had any problem. Everyone has always been fine with us, and they've even given us a calendar two years running. I chalk these reviews up to uppity Ann Arbor yuppies who expect waaay too much fealty from their local Chinese food providers.

We ate here tonight. It was inoffensive but had minor bright points. The appetizers were tasty (crab rangoon, spare ribs, wonton soup). The rest was a solid meh, Diet menu steamed chicken and veggies appeared and tasted the freshest. Pork lo mein and sesame beef were forgettable. Order small. We have enough leftovers to feed the Duggar clan. The best compliment I can give King Shing is that it isn't Lucky 7.

Everything is really good here. Great value. One meal is easily two or three.

Best Americanized Chinese food in the Ann Arbor & Ypsilanti area. Their food is consistently delicious and they're always very fast. The staff is friendly and their prices are great. Their delivery is also quick. I usually get the same things, so I know for a fact that their chicken and broccoli is delicious, as well as their fried dumplings, vegetable lomein and chicken lo mein. Don't get the egg foo young. They don't use oyster sauce, so it tastes a little bit bland.

I seriously have no idea what all the people complaining about rudeness are on about. The food is GOOD American-style Chinese -- I really like that the sauces obviously have ingredients in them, if that makes sense -- they aren't just goo out of a can. I usually get Kung Pao chicken and the sauce has bits of fermented black beans, for instance. The stir-fries have good veggies, too -- crisp-tender broccoli, actual pieces of bamboo shoots instead of those tinny tasting strips. Oh, and there are always lots of peanuts in my Kung Pao. The meat is pretty high quality -- white meat chicken with no gristle, beef isn't too fatty. (The barbequed pork chunks in the fried rice are sometimes kind of fatty, though.) Also, in December if you go in to pick up your food they give away these really adorable scroll-style wall calendars. And as a bunch of people have mentioned -- ridiculously, almost frighteningly cheap. One "dinner special" (main dish, fried rice, egg roll) is usually three meals for me, dinner + leftovers even if I'm really hungry. Finally: they're really quick, as in we call for take-out, immediately hop in the car, drive not very far, and it's ready. Mark Z, I'd throw you out of my restaurant, too.

King Shing's food is in no way worth the abuse you have to navigate in order to be served. The owner is a maniac! Just like a couple of other people who have posted, I used to be a weekly King Shing customer. But i caught the owner on a bad day, I guess. She yelled at me, called me stupid and told me to get out! Well ok, sister! I'll NEVER be back either.

This food is average Chinese food. People in my office have ordered several times from this place, however...NEVER AGAIN after today. Lady on the food was rude and yelling at me to the point I hung up on her. Then my co-worker tried and she ended up yelling on her to. When asked to speak to the manager, the lady on the other end of the phone stated she was the owner. BOO!

This is my fisrt review. I am motivated by the horrible experience I had with this restaurant. I am very disappointed due to the favorable reviews this restaurant has recieved by others. My experience was awful - from the time the order was taken (indifferent customer service) to the undercook generals chicken. The chicken was indeed pink, undercooked and prime for food poisoning. I will give them thumbs up for quick preparation, reasonable prices, and large portions. However, none of these things is worthy of me giving this restaurant another chance.

fresh, tasty, fast, inexpensive.4 good adjectives. the cold sesame noodles are really good, the crispy tofu (bean curd) is bland as it comes alone- but you can add veg etc and there was enough for two meals- and t it wasn't soggy. i dont know about the meat dishes, but veggie dishes are good. this is my chinese delivery place for the duration.

The food isn't overly fantastic, but it's cheap and they do deliver. Not only do they deliver but they accept credit card for delivery. If you are desperate for Chinese in Ann Arbor (at a reasonable price even), then this place is ok.

Growing up, every Sunday evening was a family gathering surrounding the traditional Jewish faire: Chinese food. Being that Chinese had a huge influence on my culinary upbringing, I always search for the best for where I currently reside. King Shing is that perfectly greasy, reasonably priced, "look forward to leftovers for lunch" Chinese food that I needed in Ann Arbor. My partner and I carry out from King Shing nearly once a week, since we live relatively close. We tend to get their combination platters since it's an exorbitant amount of food for a great price. I usually get the Kung Pao Chicken or Chicken with Garlic Sauce. My partner has moved on from Shrimp Egg Fu Young to Orange Chicken. Are the platters greasy? Yes. Are they delicious? Absolutely. Is it everything my palate craves when I think about American Chinese? You know it. We always get the BBQ bone-in pork ribs as well, since every good Jewish girl loves a little side of pork. These are the creme-de-la-creme of Chinese BBQ. I would bathe in that sauce if I had the opportunity. A hole in the wall, I recommend carrying out, since the seating is limited and the kitchen is bustling. Be kind to the employees, and they will be kind back. Moral of the story: when you have that feeling where Chinese food is the only option for dinner, try King Shing. You won't be sorry.

As long as you expect AMERICANIZED chinese food, then you're all set. I heard about King Shing from someone at work(and as they are right down the road from my work, I thought why not). I ordered Chicken Curry, pork friend rice, and hot and sour soup. Overall, everything is great! The Curry Chicken is good, with optional heat/spice, the hot and sour soup, while not the best, is still good, and the pork fried rice is GREAT! Now they charge $0.50 extra for the soup with lunch if you pay with a CC which is ok. Sometimes there is a noticeable difference between lunch and dinner quality in my Curry Chicken(sauce is darker, more heat, and a little drier meat) but for the most part, they have been my go to people for fast tasty chinese food. Sometimes when they are swamped, the wait for a meal can get long, but they generally let you know.

I got the garlic/ginger chicken lunch combo with fried rice. It was amazing - fresh chicken and crispy veggies in a savory brown sauce. Will be back soon!

This place is amazing - and I hate Chinese food! I was stuck on a conference call for hours with no end in sight and no food in the apartment. Ended up trying to find whatever could deliver to my apartment that wasn't pizza and decided to suck it up and do my annual "why did I order that? I hate Chinese food" adventure in disappointment. Ordered online via the yelp app and in less than 20 minutes, steaming hot food was delivered by a very friendly, older asian man. I ordered fried dumplings and Orange Chicken with a side of Chicken Fried Rice. The dumplings were *so* good that I ate half of them and was so stuffed that I waited a couple hours to break into the chicken. Which was the best orange chicken I've ever eaten - period. When my bf got home there were still leftovers (the portions were seriously huge) and we divided them up, reheated really quickly and had it for dinner - still delicious! They also had Thai food - which I love - on their menu. Next time we order from here, we'll have to try it. If it's anything like their Chinese food, they might give the local Thai places a run for their money!

Good food, fast take out service. I got a Kung Pao chicken dinner combo and all the food was quite tasty, big portions. I had plenty left over for lunch the next day and I couldn't finish the leftovers. This place is a good option for American Chinese fare.

Pros: Tasty chicken, large amounts of food, low price food, more quality than normal Cons: Doesn't take card, fried rice is not that good. I've been to King Shing many times to pick up their General Tso's chicken, and I have tried their Kung Pao tofu and Veg medley as well. As a student on campus, this is probably better than options near campus, and is good if you are on Carpenter road. I found their quality better than what is on campus as well, and it is not greasy. Their service is fairly friendly, food does not take long to come out. I wish they took card, but not many of these type of restaurants do.

Lately, I've been trying to find a new favorite Chinese restaurant after Great Lakes shutdown... well, after visiting many Chinese joints, I think I have found my favorite place so far.... How did I conduct my test? Well, I ordered two of the same dishes at all the places I visited... - Egg Plant in Garlic Sauce and Chicken Broccoli - most places don't serve the egg plant, so I opted for these two. King Shing doesn't offer egg plant dishes, so I went with Chicken Broccoli dinner combo and beef chow fun.... The Beef chow fun as ok... had better... it had this weird taste that I could not get my finger on.... but as for the Chicken Broccoli... they have everyone else beat hands down in my opinion... the taste was awesome, flavor was great and I just couldn't stop eating it.... the fried rice that came with the dinner combo was excellent as well. The place isn't a 3 star Michelin place but it's a great place for Chinese food for the amount of money you pay.... this place also has the cheapest Chinese food, but typically when it's cheap, the flavors get affected... not here... I also tried the sesame chicken that my friend ordered, it was excellent as well. They offer delivery, but sadly not to my area... the construction around here should be done in about a month or so... so getting to the place should be a lot easier.

You get A LOT of food for not very much money, which is pretty rare for a Chinese place. Most Chinese places tend to give you hardly any meat and just load their dishes with vegetables to cut costs. However, this place is really respectable for their portion sizes. The menu also has a lot of dishes to choose from, most of which classics but a few unique dishes too. My only complaint about this place and why I'm not giving it 3 stars is because the quality of ingredients sort of sucks. Overall, if you're looking for fine quality fancy Chinese, go elsewhere, but if you want a lot of fried rice or chicken and broccoli for cheap, this is the place.

  • Tony R.

Your typical Chinese take away. There is nothing special here. I called my order in. Make sure you plan for the construction on Carpenter Road. The restaurant is on the side currently being rebuilt, so there may be a line of two-way traffic that you have to navigate to get in and out of the shopping center. I ordered a General Tso's combo with beef fried rice. When I arrived, it took a moment for the lady to come to the counter. All the carryout orders were sitting on the counter in a pizza delivery bag. I haven't seen that before, but my food was still warm, so I'm OK with that. Overall opinion, decent tasting food, average customer service, average prices.

While working on contract in A2, King Shing has been my go-to for reasonably-priced Chinese food delivery. I have ordered from them more than 20 times. Staff have always been quite friendly. Delivery has consistently been prompt (30 minutes). What I Like: Fresh ingredients! Spicy dishes made spicier by request (not always hot enough for my tastes, but they don't just throw in a bunch of hot sauce and garlic) Sizable portions - enough for leftover dinner the following night Reasonably priced, especially given the quality, quantity, and service Recommended: Kung Pao Chicken Hot & Sour Soup Pork Fried Dumplings Pineapple Fried Rice For US-style Chinese fare delivered, King Shing is the best I've found in Ann Arbor. I give them 5 stars for excellence in their category and for consistently great service.

Not bad at all! I typically never go to American Chinese restaurants but I was craving almond boneless chicken and this place really hit the spot! The portion is just right and I actually had left overs of pork fried rice for dinner. The chicken was cooked just right and what I loved was the gravy. It had a hint of almond flavor so it was very different and delish. The pork fried rice was flavored so well that I am still craving how good it was after 3 days! You can't beat the lunch special, honestly for less than 5 bucks? My meal was 2 meals :) I will try their other dishes next time for sure

I LOVE this place. It definitely hit the spot when we were looking for an American Chinese restaurant. Their portions are really good and everything was so yummy. I got the soft wide noodle and it was great but my friend got the general tso's bean curd and it was AMAZING. I'm not in Ann Arbor anymore but I genuinely miss it. It was so good! If you are here I definitely recommend getting that. However, the atmosphere isn't great so I would recommend carrying out or getting delivery.

Best Chinese food in Ann Arbor! I've been living in Ann Arbor my whole life and have seen establishments come and go (RIP Middle Kingdom), always looking for a Chinese restaurant that was worth going to. Found this place 6 years ago and have never been to another Chinese restaurant since. This place has it all. I'm a vegetarian so it is always hard finding a good dish that caters to that. Here, they have so much to choose from. General Tso's tofu, vegetable moo shu, vegetable bean curd soup (add hot oil!) and their veggie fried rice are all amazing meals. Check it out! You won't be disappointed. Don't forget to get a cup of their tea! It's free :)

I come here far more than I care to admit. But sometimes, there is nothing that undoes a long work day like greasy take-out Chinese food, and King Shing always hits the spot. The lunch and dinner combos are always a steal. The one tip I do have is to steer clear of the wonton soup...Otherwise, cheap, fast (at least once the construction on Carpenter Rd. is finally over with), and delicious.

This place was definitely worth the (short) drive from downtown. Delicious general tso's and lo mein in huge portions for a reasonable price. Looking forward to trying some of their other dishes in the future.

I moved to Ann Arbor from San Francisco and have been struggling to find a replacement for my favorite Chinese food. I decided to take a chance and trust their yelp reviews. Honestly I don't know why they only have 4 starts. Their food is amazing and this is not a restaurant by any means. It's a delicious tiny place that will make your stomach happy :)

Nothing says Memorial day like Chinese takeout. After a long weekend and a longer drive we just wanted some comfort food. Called ahead hoping they delivered our way but alas we had to pick it up, no worries there we called hopped in the car and it was ready 1 minute after we arrived. They have some tables to dine in but the ambiance was ya know take out Chinese. Drove home food piping hot, veg fried rice very tasty, kung pao well done, pot stickers a bit heavy (think lots of dough) but filled with tasty potsticker goodness. Quite literally enough food for two dinners for two people. I still don't know what authentic Chinese is supposed to taste like but this is a tasty rendition.

  • Nicky W.

So, If i was grading food on quality, this place would be a 1. It's not remotely authentic, and I would advise anyone to stay away from ordering anything beef (just super slimy and oily). However, I have a soft spot for bad Chinese food, especially General Tso's Chicken. The reason this place gets a 3 star is because it's super freaking cheap. Like 4 dollar lunch special cheap. That in of itself is a merit because every other Americanized Chinese food restaurant in Ann Arbor has 7 dollar lunch specials, so this is where I take my cravings for General Tso's.

Chinese food comes in two categories for me, and ordering the Mapo Tofu usually makes it pretty obvious which you're dealing with. Category 1) Authentic, high quality food. I'm not Chinese by any stretch, nor have I been to China, so take this with a grain of salt. But I've been to a few restaurants that Chinese friends swore by, and said they were "more authentic." I prefer these, but can't find many locally. Category 2) Americanized. This is what King Shing belongs to, but that's not necessarily a terrible thing when it's what you want. Here, you'll get dishes with large portions, lots of gravy/sauce, and inexpensive prices. King Shing excels at all this. Expect a large quantity of inexpensive, relatively good food, and you'll be a happy eater.

My favorite Chinese restaurant in Michigan. I've been to dozens of them and have never been disappointed. It's nice to see the kitchen staff cutting fresh vegetables while you're ordering at the front counter. You can taste the difference even in the egg rolls that have a crispy shell and crunchy vegetables inside. Soggy egg rolls with oil saturated shells and limp vegetables drive me nuts. This place is definitely not that. Some of my favorite dishes there are garlic chicken, general's cicken and orange beef. Don't like dark meat? Just ask and they'll cook with white meat only. King Shing is a must try.

Stopped here late one evening for some takeout. The prices are what you'd expect for takeout Chinese. I got the Mongolian beef, which was fantastic. Unlike many takeout Chinese joints, the sauce isn't overly sweet or syrupy. Generous proportions, fair price, really good taste, and the wait time was reasonable. Staff won't win Friendly People of the Year, but thats fine. I'd definitely go back. UPDATE: Been back a few times, since it's between my home and my place of work. Got some other dishes I didn't really care for. Overall, it's standard takeout Chinese food in both taste and price. I don't go out of my way to go here, but I sometimes stop by on my way home from work.

I wasn't too impressed with this place, wait staff was rude and the food was so-so. I found a long black hair in my chicken and the meal was pretty much over from that. The only thing I would order again was the egg drop soup.

Great Chinese food! They have really good lunch specials & give a nice sized portion in both lunch & dinner plates. Their dinners are around the typical price for Chinese food but they give you your money's worth. The food is fresh & good quality. Also the employees have good customer service. Best Chinese place in the area.

When you make the decision to go out for a meal, know what you're hoping to find. That's key with many of the Chinese restaurants in the area. If you're looking for authentic, traditional cuisine you'll be disappointed, but if you're looking for delicious Americanized fare - you've hit the jackpot. King Shing is a diamond in the rough. Located in a tiny strip mall on one of the worst stretches of asphalt in Washtenaw county, to call it's plain and dowdy facade unassuming would be a huge understatement. The interior is practically industrial, though there are two endearing fish tanks that amuse me while waiting for my take-out. As others have noted, the General's chicken is fantastic. Another tip from me: if there's a dish on the menu listed as garlic ginger, try it. Very tasty with whatever protein you prefer. Some other favorites: - boneless ribs - deluxe lo mein - almond boneless chicken - beef fried rice The portions are generous and I can expect at least a meal and a half out of an order. In terms of service, I guess it all depends on your sense of humor. The employees know their regulars and some truly hilarious exchanges have occurred as a result. I personally enjoy the dynamic but others may not. And most visits are pretty non-descript in the character column. Bottom line: if you want authentic, try Chia Shiang or Evergreen's Traditional Menu. If you want some yummy, Americanized Chinese food - this is your place.

DOn't miss the steamed dumplings, & go for the noodle dishes- lo mien, wide soft noodles, etc. Also the soup os very good- hot & sour is actually a little spicy! Some of the best flavors I've tasted from chinese- they use fresh veggies & real spices, & are not overly loaded with MSG, so you don't end up feeling like you're completely dehydrated an hour after you eat. Be patient when placing an order- especially for delivery- there are some language challenges involved when giving an address, but they've given us great service 3 separate times, & on 1 order when they forgot an item, they brought it out, & apologized. A small family run business, & the best chinese food in town that I've had.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
